I stumbled across Depressed Cake Shop a few years ago on Facebook. If you’ve never heard of it, DCS is the brainchild of Miss Emma Cakehead and has popped up everywhere – from the UK to LA and even India! The two basic principles of DCS are that the cakes/baked goods you sell are gray (at least on the outside – there have been rainbow cakes, people!) and the proceeds go to a mental health association.
The name stood out. Depressed is not a word you associate with cake, right?
But it bears the thought: can gray cakes cure depression? That is The Question.
I don’t know, but I’d like to think that cakes, gray or not, bring a smile to someone’s face. I’d like to think that baking them has helped pull someone out of the haze of depression and/or some other form of mental illness.
I’d also like to think that through cakes and baking we can bring an awareness to depression and mental illness to provide help to those that need it and stop the stigma that mental illness is something that you should be ashamed of or something you should “just get over.”
It doesn’t work like that. It never has.
Since I’ve found out about DCS, we’ve been involved in a few pop-ups and planned two of our own. 2018 will see two more pop ups (one in Orange County and the other in the Inland Empire), along with a few other cool things we’re collaborating on. We’d love for you to be involved. Whether it’s donating baked goods, manning a table, or buying a few treats – your support means the world.
Please check out our individual DCS pages for more info and forms to get involved.

Thanks so much! <3
